Japanese Monk

Living in Japan allows me to meet new people very regularly.  I learn new things all of the time, but what I learn about the people that I am the closest to is sometimes surprising.  A few months back I was climbing with a buddy and he mentioned that he was a Buddhist monk.  “What?” I replied.  He had been for many years and actually was in charge of a temple down the road.  I told him that I would love to take his photo at his temple which he immediately declined.  Eventually after weeks of asking he accepted on the terms that he could have all of the photos for his temple to use.

As a foreigner in a foreign land, what we may perceive one way,  is eventually proven to be far more complex and sometimes incomprehensible.  In the two years that I have lived in Japan, I can honestly say that each time I venture out into the depths of this great country, I am once again reminded of how much there is for me to know and learn.  Everyday is an important learning experience, no matter if it only involves a trip to my local ramen shop for lunch.
