This past February The North Face Cup final commenced at Yuji Hirayama’s Base Camp climbing gym in the Tokyo area. I had the great honer to work with James Pearson and Caroline Ciavaldini as well as climbers from all over Asia. Everyone was an absolute blast to work with and I truly enjoyed meeting and hanging out with these guys. The cup was another fantastic event, as per usual, a perfect way to start off the new year.
After the cup we headed south to the Toyota area to check out the bouldering there. The granite boulders of this area are VERY high friction this time of the year and quite good. They vary from featureless slabs to steep hard test pieces. There are several routes on this area, both trad and sport. If you ever travel around Japan make sure to bring your climbing shoes with you everywhere. So much to see and climb.
I am moving to northern Italy this summer, after four years in Japan, but am planning on returning each year for the NFC. It’s a great excuse to return annually to see my friends and eat the amazing food, I mean to work, yea work…….
Go Climb Something!!!!
