Recently, I finished an extraordinary personal project on the Alta Via 1 trail here in the Dolomites. I had heard about the trail after just one search via google, “Amazing Trails Dolomites”. I looked at some of the images from various points on the trail, called a couple local friends and planned for a early August shoot.
The weather was great all summer. I expected to have some of the best light that anyone could ask for. The morning of the first day was no different. Beautiful in Friuli. I headed for the Dolomites and to meet my good friend Andrea Polo and new friend Letizia Filosa. The weather started to become more and more cloudy as I drove deeper into the Dolos.
I pulled into the parking lot at our first start and asked Andrea, “Sooooooo, is the first time it’s gonna rain in a month today?” “No way, it’s gonna be amazing!” There was no way our psych would be weakened by a few heavy looking clouds.
The plan was to start at Passo Duran then stay at Rifugio Vazzoler in the Civetta group. Then, head around Civetta through Rifugio Coldai, down into the valley then back up to Rifugio Venezia under the eastern side of Monte Pelmo. From Rifugio Venezia, we would go almost straight up and over Pelmo then down to Rifugio Città di Fiume. We would head north east to Passo Giau where we strategically shuttled a van.
The weather for the most part was perfect. When the clouds came in we adjusted and made sure to capture the dramatic clouds that would surround us each day.
Thanks Andrea and Latvia for such a great time. Looking forward to the next adventure soon!!
