Fussa Temples

I live in Fussa which is situated in the western portion of the Tokyo Prefecture. By Japanese standards Fussa is a rural community despite its many large buildings and sprawling areas of development. Hardly the rural farm town my American mind conditions me to expect from ‘farm country.’ There are farms here but they are sprinkled amongst the shopping malls and tightly packed housing. A far cry from Kansas or Iowa.

Fussa boasts many other sights that, being American, I find very interesting. The temples here are beautiful. They are not extravagant or large, but beautiful in their own uniqueness. Some of the temples are new while others are centuries old.

Recently, I visited a few of these temples with my son and took some photos that I hope you will enjoy. While you gander at these photos, imagine that it is some time in the 1800’s. Imagine the amount of time and patience that was involved in creating these amazing figures. Imagine the history that has elapsed to form this beautiful belief system based on helping others. Simply because that is your purpose.
