One of the areas that Jack and I are about to open is a place called the Gold River Area. This area is very nice and if you are a beginner to intermediate climber, the Gold River is perfect for you. The high concentration of moderate problems will keep many climbers busy here for a while. This area mainly consists of eight large boulders with a few smaller blocks peripherally scattered about. Recently we have been cleaning several of the boulders that were climbed in the areas genies. The moss will overtake a boulder here in a few months so it is important to have things ready to go. After the final cleaning is done this area will be opened next month. Our hope is that this area will give people more options than just the main area of Mizugaki.
On Monday Gavin and I went to the Gold River and met Jack and his wife. We cleaned a few boulders and I tried a new line that was still wet from the previous rain. Jack was able to send a variation of the line and give he gave it a V3 rating. As I was putting on my shoes to have a go, I glanced over at Gavin and a drop of rain hit him on his forehead. This startled us both. Gavin looked at me perplexed and I looked at Jack. Jack said that the rain would stick around for an hour or two. I decided to retreat from the wet boulders in the forest to take some photos of the dreary landscape on our way home. I figured I would make another trip back up in a couple of days to try and wrap up some unfinished business.
I am driving back up tomorrow, Thursday for me, to clean more boulders and try and finish what I started on the Bonsai boulder. My buddy Jensen and I will be out for sun and sends, so look out for cruxy pictures in the coming days.
This area will be included in the Japan bouldering guidebook that I am developing. I do not have a date when the guide will be out but I am hoping next year some time. It all depends on how focused I can keep myself. Also, if you are an English speaking person and want the guide to include something in particular please let me know. I want the guide to be the best I can make it so please contribute. This guide will be a bouldering guide to select areas close to Tokyo. Let me know and I will do my best to incorporate your best ideas into the guide. Being a foreigner myself, the information that I have gathered is a true asset for any traveling climber or resident climber in Japan.
I will keep everyone abreast of the guidebook situation in the coming weeks and months. I hope you are as excited as I am about the guide. I am pumped!
