First I would like to apologize for not writing a post until now. I have been crazy busy.
Team G arrived in Honolulu, HI on Thursday the 7th. We went straight to our hotel, the Hilton in Waikiki and we were blown away with the hotel. The only thing I have to say about the Hilton is that from now on it will be hard for any hotel that we stay in to live up to the amazing amenities we had and the experience as a hole. The hotel is only two blocks from the ocean and our balcony faced the ocean. The sun sets were absolutely amazing every day.
After a few days of checking out the Waikiki area and Gavin and I went and met up with my buddy Jack from Japan. We picked him up from his hotel and decided to go check out the bouldering and surf at Waimea beach. Needless to say this is the perfect place to start a climbing trip in Hawaii.
The rock is 40 yards from the water, which on the first day that waves over 10 feet breaking into the beach, and offers shade most of the day. Talking with some locals they say the best time to go is at night because of the heat. Maybe it is because I am from Louisiana, but the heat was no problem for me. With a little chalk the volcanic rock was quite nice.
I am not too sure what problems Jack and I played on but we went straight for the Tyrannosaurus Rex overhang. There seems to be several problems on this overhang ending in every direction. We played on a few warm ups and tried some what we thought were harder problems. After each go we took breaks to soak in the crazy beach break and Waimea’s beautiful atmosphere.
We decided to call it a day after a only few hours. Gavin was starting to miss his mom and we were all hungry. The next day Jack and I were planning on meeting up with Justin from Volcanic Rock Gym to get the local beta for the developing Oahu bouldering scene.
I will be posting many more posts from this trip with tons of photos. Here are some to hold you over for the time being.
