This past weekend Jack and I heard that the weather at Mizugaki was going to be splitter. When we turned onto the last mountain road before the parking lot there was 3-4 inches of snow waiting for us. There was also twice as many people then are normally there on any given day, because of a recent magazine feature. Luckily for Jack and I we know of several areas that were not in the feature and quickly made our way up the mountain on a solitary trail.
Due to the snow the shady areas of the mountain were unclimbable, so we followed the sun as much as we could for the day. The temperature was only 38, which is not too bad, but because of the snow it was hard to stay dry and warm. We established a new V4 on the Giri Giri Slab and a couple of harder lines on a new boulder higher up the mountain that feel like V6-8ish. Neither Jack or I could send. Shallow pockets on steep granite that were almost out of our reach. Dead pointing to each hold was the only option, but the last move is just to far for us. We are going to go back and try and make the last move with a dynamic throw and see what happens.
Today, Saturday in Japan, Star, Gavin, and I are heading back up to Mizugaki to check out some boulders on the lower side of the mountain. I am hoping that it will be warmer and that the snow will have melted by now down below. The forecast calls for blue skies and sun for the next five days. We are car camping tonight so I hope that we stay warm enough in the back of the car. If not, I will just crank it up!! I hope everyone has a nice warm weekend full of friends, family, and of course hard sends!!
Go Climb Something!!!!
