Save Queen Creek

I am not sure how many of you are aware, but the Queen Creek climbing area in Arizona is in danger of have sections of it closed. A mining company, Resolution Copper, is poised to take over a large area of land to start mining which will subsequently close several areas in and around QC. I am not a seasoned QC climber, but the few times that I have gone I have thoroughly enjoyed my time there. The rock quality seems spotty in places, but the aesthetic of the area sure is beautiful. For a local perspective I would refer you to www.geir.com. Here is an email that he sent out recently:

As many of you know, I have been working on the Queen Creek Coalition board in an attempt to negotiate with Resolution Copper to maintain as much access as possible to climbing in Queen Creek Canyon. Unfortunately these negotiations have not produced an acceptable offer from Resolution Copper.
Many of you already know that Resolution removed all provisions for climbers in their most recent version of the land exchange legislation, which passed the House last year. Without provisions in the legislation or a separate agreement, climbers stand to lose access to much of Queen Creek canyon without any compensation.
Additionally, Resolution Copper recently expressed interest in closing public access to some areas in Queen Creek prior to the land exchange. This included the Mine, Euro Dog Valley, and Magma Mine road (which would cut off easy access to Lower Devil’s Canyon, the Refuge, Hackberry Creek, and other smaller areas.) The QCC has already indicated opposition to this to RCM and we wanted to get this information to the public quickly once we learned this.
The full public statement about this turn of events can be read on our website at www.theqcc.org. Please take time to read over this.
Sincerely,
Geir
If you would like to help the cause to save Queen Creek please send your inquiries to the QCC’s Facebook page here. Thanks for your consideration on this! I leave you with a couple of old photos that were taken a few years back of a small sector of Queen Creek. Enjoy.
