I am just grooving into my routine back home after a very productive trip to the Hawaiian islands. I went out to meet up with La Sportiva athlete Andrew Fast to capture his attempt to break the sea to summit record up the Haleakala volcano located on Maui. Let me first say that the Hawaiian islands are quite beautiful. I have been out a couple of times and each time I head out the door I imagine huge water falls and dense wet jungles. While both are found all over the islands, a much drier side of them is ever more prevalent. Remember these islands were created by volcanos, some of which are still active. The island of Maui is no different. Haleakala is a huge fixture on the southern half of the island that dominates the horizon from every angle.
Since Andrew is an endurance athlete, he had been on the island training for a week or so before he made the speed ascent. “Maui is not only a great place for a vacation, but it is perfect for endurance training. The open water swimming is amazing with all of the sea life swimming all around. And the views while road biking is pretty breathtaking.” Andrew told me while having a beer at the Maui Brewing Company. On the morning that he chose to make the attempt, with the forecast looking clear and calm, Andrew set out for the record. And after just over 3 and a half hours, Andrew found himself on top of the summit of Haleakala at 10,023 feet, but the adventure was not over yet. Worn out, he was still determined to ride his bike down from the summit back where he started to pick up his car. As the day was coming to a close Andrew made his way back to his car and later had a celebratory brew.
Congrats to Andrew for making this dream come true and thanks to La Sportiva for making such great products to make this all come to fruition.
Hey Eddie, whats up?!
to me, this Maui runner job is some of your best work up til now.
Looks like a truly stunning place. Cant wait to go there to catch some surf one day.
Cheers,
Alex
Thank you Alex. Yes, we need to go back and hit up several places that I came across, climbing and surf! Next Christmas/New Years?
