After a much needed rest day, the remaining North Face athlete, Daniel Woods joined Yuji Hirayama and Adidas athlete Sachi Amma for a taste of what Japanese 5.14d/15a feels like at Futigoyama. As it turned out, we arrived mid morning to a snowed in road. Hiking in for about 30 minutes in 1 to 20 inches of snow was not expected by anyone. Needless to say most of us were not expecting these conditions and were unprepared. With wet pants and boots we trudged through to the sunny side of Futigoyama or Twin Peaks.
The main climbing area is south facing and has sun from about 10am to 5pm. Yuji, Daniel and Sachi were all pumped to climb and started to warm up right away. The conditions were good, but still a bit on the cold side for sending hard lines.
After a couple of laps on a 12d and 13a, Daniel and Sachi set their sights on their main objective, Flat Mountain. Daniel went up first setting the draws and working the sequences one by one. Sachi went up next. This is Sachi’s second season working Flat Mountain and he says he feels like he is close to linking it. Sachi and Yuji tell me that the crux sequence maybe 8 to 10 moves long! Power endurance anyone?
Though no one sent FM that day, it was a very successful day of shooting and climbing. The last hour of light was perfect and created some fantastic shadows on the very featured limestone. Daniel says he will be back to try the route again next year. So many projects, so little time……..
Go Climb Something!!!
[…] Nice gallery by Eddie Gianelloni of Daniel Woods and Sachi Amma working Yuji Hirayama’s Flat Mountain (5.14+, unrepeated?) in Futigoyama, Japan during Woods’ recent trip there. […]
Super nice shots Eddie. It was a pleasure to be out there with you guys. Hopefully Sachi will get the third ascent next year when conditions are good again (the second ascent was done by Toru Nakajima). If Daniel comes over for The North Face Cup again, maybe he and Sachi can battle it out for the third ascent, haha.
