Spring marks the start of many things here in Japan. One of those things is the Japanese festival or matsuri season. One of the first matsuris held this year was the Jindaiji Daruma-ichi. This daruma matsuri is one of the largest in Japan. At this matsuri, you purchase daruma dolls of all sizes that have plain white eyes. A monk is nearby ready to paint in a letter from the Indian bonji script that means “begun”. This signifies that you have made a wish that you hope to come true over the course of a year. Once your wish has come true you bring in your daruma doll and have the other eye filled in with a black dot signifying the process complete. When the Jindaiji Daruma-ichi matsuri comes around again everyone brings their dolls and gives them to the monks to burn and finalize the process.
