Considered one of Japan’s hardest sport climbing areas, Horai is home to many classic lines put up by Japanese strong man Dai Koyomada, amongst others. Recently Sachi Amma and Akiyo Noguchi have set their eyes on several projects in this area and are keen to spend quite a bit of there free time in this amazing place high in the Japanese country side.
After an hour of steep hiking through river beds and beautiful bamboo forest, you are again rewarded with dozens of free standing cliffs that range in height and steepness. Most of the names escape me, but by far the most popular area is the roof where Dai’s Ganja 8b+ is located. This roof is where a plethora of 7b+ to 8b+ lines are and where on any given day you will run into some of Japan’s strongest climbers. This is also where Sachi Amma’s new goal in Japan is located. Sachi plans on raising the bar on Japan’s hardest onsight of 8a+/b set by Yuji Hirayama. A tough goal, especially since almost all of the routes in Japan at this level are, well stiff. Akiyo has also set her sights on being the first women in Japan to onsight 8a in Japan.
I will update with news as events come to light, but for now I will leave you with some images from the last trip up to Horai with the amazing Akiyo Noguchi and Sachi Amma. Good luck guys!
